It is debatable whether women should do yoga during their periods. Some claim that a woman shouldn’t do yoga while on her period, while others advise doing everything. Practice the inversions, while advising yourself against it.
Regarding menstruation, each woman experiences them differently. Others experience such severe pain, mood swings, exhaustion, bloating, irritability and other symptoms that they have to stay in bed for the first few days. Some people may not experience discomfort or lack of energy.
Menstruation is extremely fragile; this will change if we experience stress, travel or make dietary changes, among others. Every woman should be aware of her menstrual cycle and pay attention to her body. Our emotional and physical health is reflected in our menstrual cycle. As a result, not only yoga but also the mind can have an effect, so doing meditation and introspection should be combined with only yoga asanas.
Preetika Bhatnagar, co-founder of Bodsphere, says: “The main reason why we might decide not to practice could be because of the accompanying menstrual symptoms. Even the thought of practicing will make a woman feel bad if she has really severe periods.
Yoga nidra, chanting, and some gentle pranayama techniques like buzzing bee breath, alternate nostril breathing, victorious breath, and deep breathing are the ideal practices at this time. “You can take it slow during the physical part of yoga as it will be a great way to relieve painful cramps. Yoga practice can be helpful in balancing emotions such as mood swings, anxiety, anger, despair and irritability, and gently opening the pelvic region to relieve any tension if we don’t feel too uncomfortable,” adds Bhatnagar.
