China sentences Chinese-Canadian star Kris Wu to 13 years


A Chinese court on Friday sentenced Chinese-Canadian pop star Kris Wu to 13 years in prison on rape charges.

The Chaoyang District Court in Beijing said Wu was sentenced to 11 years and 6 months for rape in 2020 and 1 year and 10 months for the “crime of gathering a crowd to engage in sexual promiscuity in a 2018 incident in which he and others allegedly assaulted two women they had gotten drunk.

The court said the three victims in the rape case were also drunk and could not resist.

He said a combined sentence of 13 years had been agreed and that Wu would be immediately deported after serving his sentence.

“Based on the facts…the nature, circumstances and adverse consequences of the crime, the court has rendered the above judgment,” the court said in an online statement.

A Canadian diplomat was in court to hear the sentencing, he added.

The June trial of the 32-year-old former South Korean band member EXO was closed to the public to protect the privacy of alleged victims.

Rape is punishable by three to ten years in prison, although exceptional cases may result in harsher penalties of up to death. The second charge Wu faces carries a sentence of up to five years in prison.

Wu grew up in Guangzhou, China and Vancouver, British Columbia.
