FIFA World Cup 2022: Germany vs Japan prediction, time, live-streaming details

Only one of Japan’s last eight World Cup games has ended in a win, but that triumph over Colombia in their first game in Russia was enough to advance them to the round of 16 last time out.

This will be Hansi Flick’s first major competition as Germany manager, and he will want to make sure his team leaves a lasting impression. Die Mannschaft haven’t exactly dazzled with their efforts in 2022, as Flick’s side have managed just two wins in nine games.

Despite appearing in seven consecutive finals and having extensive international experience, Hajime Moriyasu’s side have never made it past the first round of back-to-back World Cups, a historic trend that Japan would like to stave off this time around. The Samurai Blue have reached the round of 16 seven times in a total of 22 FIFA World Cup appearances.

Germany have a dismal record of just two wins in their last eight games, which hasn’t helped the Germans’ confidence. Germany can tie Brazil for the most World Cup wins with five if they win the tournament in Qatar, as four-time champions Italy are out of contention. However, if recent results are any indication, beating a group that includes Spain, Japan and Costa Rica won’t be easy.

In their six World Cup appearances since 1998, Japan have a history of losing in the group stage before advancing to the knockout stages. But to qualify with 15 out of 18 wins and a record 58 goals is undoubtedly encouraging for Japan.

The four-time World Cup champions have never faced Japan in a competitive game, but it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise to learn they have won their two previous encounters, with Germany triumphing 3-0 in a friendly match in 2004 and drawing 2-2 in another exhibition game two years later.

Key players

Since his World Cup debut in 2010, Thomas Muller has been Germany’s star player in recent tournaments, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in 16 appearances. But, Muller may not be a lock to start as the focus will be on Youssoufa Moukoko, the youngest participant in the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar and probably the most promising young German prospect since. Jamal Musiala’s rise to glory at Bayern.

Despite being named in Japan’s preliminary squad as early as Brazil 2014, Takumi Minamino is set to make his World Cup debut. With 10 goals and four assists, Minamino was Japan’s pivotal player in qualifying. He will look to continue this form in the finals.

Date, time and place

The Germany vs Japan match will be played on November 23 at 6:30 p.m. (Indian time) at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.

Live Stream Details

The Germany vs Japan match will be streamed live on Sports18 and Sports18 HD TV channels in India and both the Jio Cinema app and website will offer free live streaming of the event.

Germany will be serious for the first match because they would not risk facing Spain to advance to the next round. Expect 3-0 in favor of the German team despite a good show from Japan.
