GOP’s McCarthy threatens to impeach Mayorkas over border

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday called on Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign from managing the United States’ southern border with Mexico, warning that the new majority of the House GOP will open investigations that could lead to impeachment proceedings.

McCarthy, who is well-positioned to become the new Speaker of the House when the new Congress meets in January, said the Republican majority will use “the power of the purse and the power of subpoena” to hold the administration down. of President Joe Biden responsible for border security.

“If Secretary Majority does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action and every failure to determine if we can open an impeachment inquiry,” McCarthy said at a news conference in El Paso. , in Texas.

“This investigation could lead to an impeachment inquiry,” he said.

Along with fellow House Republicans, mostly from Texas, McCarthy said he spoke with the new chairs of the relevant investigative committees and gave his “full support” to Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, on the committee. judiciary and Rep. James Comer, R-Ky., to the Oversight Committee to initiate investigations.

McCarthy said he expects Mayorkas to step down by Jan. 3, when the new Congress convenes. Investigations would begin on day one, he said. “That’s enough,” he said.

House Republicans have placed border security among their top priorities — and mayors among their senior officials to investigate and attempt to remove from office, possibly through impeachment.

McCarthy has yet to secure votes from House Republicans to become president, and he is working quickly to build support ahead of the vote from what is expected to be a slim majority and a few seats.

The California Republican especially needs the votes of his right-wing conservative lawmakers, who are eager to begin impeachment proceedings against Mayorkas and other Biden administration officials.

Lawmakers pledged to hold public hearings at the border to highlight security concerns.

“Alejando Mayorkas needs to step down,” said Rep. Kat Cammack, R-Fla., who joined the group at the border. “And if he doesn’t, we will.”
