Kerr’s Chelsea continue perfect WCL start

Sam Kerr’s Chelsea maintained their 100 per cent start to their Women’s Champions League campaign, beating Real Madrid 2-0 at Kingsmeadow.

Kerr, who played the full 90 minutes, went close with a header, while Sophie Ingle and Erin Cuthbert scored second-half goals as the Blues secured three straight wins in Group A to stay in lead, five points clear of second-placed Paris St. Germain.

Emma Hayes’ side returned top of the Women’s Super League after Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Tottenham and deservedly beat Real, who have lost just once this season in all competitions confused.

Fran Kirby came close to the opener in an uneventful first half, but her first effort went wide of the target.

The Spaniards, whose only previous defeat was against Barcelona in their domestic league, gradually progressed into the game in the second half.

But home nerves were eased in the 67th minute when Ingle headed Millie Bright’s kick in from a corner.

Cuthbert doubled the Londoners’ lead 12 minutes later as his deflected cross shot deflected past Real keeper Misa Rodriguez.

It was a winning return to Kingsmeadow for manager Emma Hayes, who was back in the Stamford Bridge dugout on Saturday after recovering from an emergency hysterectomy last month.
