Australian workplaces are increasingly adopting flexible working arrangements, with many adopting a new approach that prioritizes meeting job performance expectations over time spent in the office.
The latest data was released by the Agency for Gender Equality in the Workplace on Friday, after surveying nearly 5,000 employers.
The research found that almost 40% of workplaces had roles in place that allowed staff to choose how, where and when to work.
Moving away from traditional timed hours, the new model focuses on production and results.
The number of employers who offered work-from-home arrangements increased from 35% in 2019 to 66% in 2021, as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the change.
The director of the Agency for Gender Equality in the Workplace, Mary Wooldridge, said flexible working was a key driver of gender equality.
“Employers need to be creative in allowing their employees to have flexibility that meets their specific needs,” Ms Wooldridge said.
“Innovative actions we’ve seen from employers include creating shifts specifically during or outside of school hours, and offering job sharing or part-time work for management roles or of management.
“These types of measures facilitate the equal participation of men and women in the labor market, whether in the office or at home.”
