Senegal win leaves hosts Qatar on brink

Senegal strikers Boulaye Dia, Famara Diedhiou and Bamba Dieng all scored to secure a deserved 3-1 victory over Qatar and leave the host nation on the brink of elimination after their clash in Group A of the World Cup.

After Friday’s match at the Al Thumama Stadium, Senegal have three points from two games and face Ecuador in a final pool game on Tuesday.

Qatar still have no points and will be eliminated from the tournament if the Netherlands beat Ecuador or if this game ends in a draw later on Friday.

Qatar have little to complain about – it took them until the 63rd minute of their second game to score a shot on target, when Almoez Ali forced a fine save from Edouard Mendy.

At that point, they were already trailing by two goals.

A howler from Boualem Khoukhi allowed Dia to open the scoring four minutes before the break. The defender grabbed the ball from under his feet as he tried to clear and Dia headed home.

Diedhiou took the lead in a second from a corner and Dieng secured the victory late in the game.

Qatar scored their first-ever World Cup goal 12 minutes from time as Ghana striker Mohammed Muntari blasted home a powerful cross from Ismail Mohamad.

But it was a rare moment of celebration for the home supporters.
