Watch: Leopard enters housing complex in Maharashtra’s Kalyan, injures 3 people

Residents of a housing complex in Kalyan, Maharashtra, awoke to news that a leopard had entered their premises. A Thane district official said the feline injured three people, who suffered minor injuries.

The leopard had snuck into the premises of Shreeram Anugraha Tower on Chinchpada Road in the morning, leaving panicked locals to call forest department and police personnel, he said.

“Three people were slightly injured and received first aid at a local hospital. The leopard has been kept in captivity and we are awaiting a cage that it will be moved into (for site evacuation),” forest officer Sanjay Channe told reporters.

The area drew huge crowds after news of a leopard’s presence spread, officials added. They said the leopard may have snuck into the site from the nearby hills of Haji Malang. which has a thick forest cover.

According Hindustan time, one of the injured is Rajiv Pandey, a 38-year-old teacher. He suffered head injuries after the leopard attacked him as he wandered from building to building.

A team from the Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) arrived on site to calm the animal and release it into the wild.

“Our main goal is to rescue the leopard first. The injured are being treated. There are no casualties so far. After the rescue, we will find out how the leopard got into the residential building. All the team is working on resident safety,” said Shrikant Raut, a forestry officer on site. Hindustan time.

The incident comes just a day after a leopard was rescued from a densely populated area in Nashik city, Maharashtra, hours after it was spotted there, officials said on Wednesday. The feline had entered Ayesha Nagar locality in the Vadala Road area around 9.30pm on Tuesday and was caged shortly after midnight on Wednesday, they said.

“The leopard entered the bungalow of a certain Ejaz Qazi from the region. He was sitting under a car parked in the parking lot of the house. The presence of the big cat sparked panic in the locality,” an official said.
