Police have established a crime scene at a Woolworths store, which remains closed after a woman died while working.

She was reported injured at the store in Jesmond Central, near Newcastle in the NSW Hunter region, at around 7.30am on Friday.

NSW Police said paramedics attended the store but the woman suffered “fatal injuries” and was pronounced dead.

“Officers from Newcastle Police District have established a crime scene and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident,” NSW Police said in a statement.

“Initial inquiries suggest that there are no suspicious circumstances.”

The woman was employed by a third-party cleaning company that provided specialist cleaning services to the Jesmond store.

A spokesman for Woolworths said the supermarket giant was “deeply saddened by this tragic incident”.

“Our thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones at this difficult time,” the spokesperson said.

“We are helping SafeWork NSW and NSW Police and working with our contract cleaning partner.”

The supermarket said its priority was to provide support for the woman’s family.

The Jesmond store will remain closed.

A report will be prepared for the coroner’s information.
